At almost 5,000 feet elevation in the Andean foothills, the Adrianna vineyard’s calcareous soils and cool climate are the promised land of Chardonnay. The fruit from the Adrianna vineyard has a purity of flavors and a minerality that is particular to this vineyard and can not be found anywhere else in Mendoza. The nearby, gravel-covered Domingo Vineyard makes up 20% of the blend. The wine spends 14 months in French oak gaining weight and complexity before bottling. A remarkable white wine, with flavours of pear, apricot and lemon. There are subtle hints of white flowers and warm, smoky notes on the finish. A bold white with the power to stand up to roast white meat or perhaps enjoy with a halibut steak.

    Description

Nicolas Catena Zapeta is an extremely deserved winner of a lifetime achievement award from the wine enthusiast. His seach for perfection and innovation helped put Argentina on the wine map and inspired a generation of Argentinian winemakers. However, it doesn’t just stop at Nicolas. His daughter, Dr Laura Catena, has taken charge of the estate and the name has gone from strength to strength under her stewardship. A medical doctor, winemaker and figure of inspiration, Laura is a one-off. She has become an icon in the world of wine and continues to push boundaries and make incredible wines.

The Catena approach has always been terroir first, which is how they have uncovered some of the finest land Argentina has to offer. The Addriana vineyard is thought of as the Grand Cru of South America – the wines from here are simply sensational.

The textbook barrel-fermented 2019 Catena Alta Chardonnay was produced in 500-liter barrels with wild yeasts, and the élevage was in those same barrels with lees and lasted for 14 months. It has an expressive and characterful nose that combines notes of dry herbs, white flowers and fruit. It's elegant with good integration of the oak and has great freshness and very good acidity.
93/100 - Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate

Pressed in whole bunches, the 2019 Chardonnay Catena Alta combines grapes from Villa Bastías and Gualtallary, both in Tupungato. The mature perfume includes pear and apricot with herbal hints that soar over a beautifully deep layer of French oak in which the wine was fermented and spent 14 months. The butter and cream are held in check by the excellently judged acidic tension making this a velvety, delicate and refreshing white.
92/100 - Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous (Tasted May 2020)
