Prelude is noted as a no-vintage Champagne but in truth it is a vintage made from exclusively grand cru vineyards. The colour is a brilliant, pale yellow with silvery highlights, reflective of the high proportion of Chardonnay. The bubbles are fine and form a lasting and delicately creamy mousse. The nose is subtle and fresh. The initial mineral aromas quickly develop into green, floral scents with hints of elderflower and spicy cinnamon overtones. Flavours are dominated by intense fresh citrus fruit which then give way to a much fuller, well-bodied and mellow taste with flavours reminiscent of white peaches in syrup. The finish is long, rich and extremely expressive. This wine can be enjoyed as an aperitif but has the structure to match grilled fish and seafood.

    Description

Taittinger is one of the few Grande Marques which remains family owned and operated to this day. The house cellars once belonged to Benedictine monks and is now UNESCO listed. The hallmark of Taittinger is the large percetnage of Chardonnay in their wines. This is exemplified in their blanc de blancs Prestige Cuvee, Comtes de Champagne.

The latest release of Taittinger's NV Brut Prélude Grands Crus is showing nicely, offering up aromas of pear, crisp stone fruit, warm biscuits and marzipan. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and precise, with tangy acids and fine depth at the core, this is still a little reserved after what I suspect is quite a recent disgorgement, and it will merit a little patience.
