As Ladieras is made using 30 – 60 year old Garnacha vines from tiny, high altitude vineyards. Fermented using indiegnnous yeast, the wine is aged in a combination of large oak barrels and concrete eggs. A lifted nose of raspberry, red cherry, bay and rosemary. The palate is suprisingly light in spite of the great flavour concentration. Try pairing with herb-crusted lamb or even give it a go with sushi!

    Description

Cuevas de Arom is a new project in Calatayud led by friends Fernando Mora MW and Mario López. The project’s aim is to redefine the style of Garnacha by producing elegant and fresh examples of the variety. In their search for Spain’s finest and forgotten plantings of Garnacha, the project became a joint venture with Bodegas San Alejandro, a unique cooperative which champions the conservation of old vines, and the development of organic and sustainable viticulture. The cooperative still owns some of the oldest and highest vineyards in the region planted on precipitous slopes, offering Cuevas de Arom access to the best Garnacha fruit.

Nice red fruit in the nose. Soft taste with strawberry red fruit on the tounge. Nice opening in the end.

The 2018 As Ladieras was produced with grapes from the northern slopes of the village of Ainzón. It fermented with 50% full clusters in open 5,000-kilo vats and matured in approximately equal parts in 500-liter oak barrels, concrete vat and concrete eggs for 10 months. It's 14.5% alcohol but keeps freshness and balance. There is better integration of the oak compared with the previous vintage I tasted; it's floral and fresher, with red rather than black fruit. There is tension in the palate, fine tannins and a long finish. 10,920 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2020.
