Kiwa comes from Escarpment’s Te Muna road vineyard, planted in 1999. This is the most Burgundian style of Pinot from Escarpment. Aromas of ripe red cherry and raspberry eminate from the glass. The palate is savoury with flavours of violet and liquorice mixing with a hint of earthiness. This is a delicious Pinot to tempt the Francophiles out there!

    Description

Larry McKenna – otherwise known as Larry McPinot – is the man behind Escarpment, having founded it in 1999. Larry and his team now work closely with Australian wine estate Torbreck, who purchased the estate in 2019, to ensure the continued success of the wines. Larry remains head winemaker, bringing his award-winning approach to each vintage.

The vineyards are sited above a natural escarpment sitting above the Huarangarua River on ancient gravels. Overlooking them are the Aorangi Ranges where Maori legend has it that the Polynesian voyager Kupe abandoned 3 canoes. The upturned canoes are still clearly visible, silhouetted along the top of the ridge, and Kupe’s image takes pride of place on every Escarpment label. Escarpment is registered as a Sustainable NZ producer and is currently following a five-year plan to become organically certified.

This elegant, light red wine is very enjoyable indeed and I will definitely buy more!

A fine, fragrant and elegant style that accumulates structure over the course of its journey. While gentle and welcoming at first, with sweet blackberry and black cherry fruit, there's a firm line that pulls this through. There's no doubting this is a structured wine, which is likely a combination of both acidity and a fairly hefty 50% whole-bunch component, providing a fine fur to the tannins. The 40% oak is well integrated, adding a subtle cedar note on the medium-length finish, which offers dried herbs, red cherry and dried cranberry flavors.
