This lower alcohol Sauvignon Blanc nearly leaps out of the glass. With red capsicum, passionfruit and fresh herb notes, it’s full and satisfying to taste, with that crisp refreshing, tropical Marlborough finish.

Description

Forrest Wines is a family-owned business, unique in owning land in four of the great terroirs of New Zealand; Marlborough, Waitaki Valley, Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay, North Otago and Bannockburn, in Otago. Leaving behind careers in molecular biology and medicine, Drs John and Brigid Forrest established the winery in 1988 and remain hands on in all aspects of the family wine business. Forrest Wines is home to The Doctors’ range. With the strapline, ‘Innovation through Excellence’ these wines are all lower-alcohol than comparable New Zealand whites while maintaining the typical Marlborough flavour profile and palate that consumers have grown to love. The lower alcohol is achieved by restricting the sugar concentration in the fruit at harvest as well as arresting fermentation at the appropriate time.

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc The Doctors' is, as in previous vintages, just 9.5% alcohol. It was in a Master of Wine tasting exam one year, and most students didn't spot the lower alcohol level, reflecting the good job Forrest is doing. It’s not as flamboyantly tropical as most Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc's with lemon, apple and gooseberry flavours, and some people will actually prefer that. While there's 7g/L of sugar, the 2021 is not sweet but well balanced, adding a touch of flesh to this light-bodied, crisp style. There seems to be a little more concentration and depth in 2021. Perhaps the best Doctors’ I've had yet. Drink in youth on a summer afternoon.
