Imagine a black forest cake, chock-full of juicy cherries and Black Doris plums; served up with a generous dollop of blueberry compote, laced with nutmeg and cloves. This is a deeply coloured pinot, exuding lush, ripe fruit – highly fragrant with a cedar-like spiciness and hints of hot-smoked nuts. The palate is dense and generous with rich fruit, fine tannins and a delicious spicy finish. A high quality Marlborough Pinot Noir perfectly matched with hoisin glazed duck.

    Description

Greywacke (pronounced Greywacky) is the Marlborough label of the Judd family and the name of New Zealand’s most abundant bedrock. These understated grey river stones are found throughout Marlborough’s rivers and alluvial vineyard soils. All the Greywacke vineyards are sustainably managed with substantial and increasing proportions coming from organically farmed sites. Kevin Judd is one of Marlborough’s pioneer winemakers whose career is intrinsically linked with the global profile of New Zealand wine. Kevin was the winemaker behind the iconic, Cloudy Bay Sauvignon back when it first gained global plaudits and recognition.

Oaky nose and palate entrapping all the fruitiness of the variety. Really good PN from NZ

The 2019 Pinot Noir is an impressive, broody, rich wine with a smoky, meaty personality. There's a change to the maturation regimen in 2019, with élevage reduced from 18 to 12 months, but the wine spent its maturation time in high-toast Mercurey barrels, which have a strong personality. The depth of fruit carries the smoky bacon-like oak flavors and acts as a counterpoint to the sweet red cherry and floral notes. The finish is dry, savory and relatively robust. I rather like this for its “no guts, no glory” attitude. Best Greywacke Pinot yet? Probably.
