Upon release it is deep ruby in colour. The nose is a brooding amalgam of red fruit and savoury aromas. Tantalising impressions of raspberry, dark cherry and blood orange uncoil from the glass, shot with hints of earth, game, chocolate, violets and sweet spice. In the mouth it is gorgeously styled, rich and savoury on a silky fine palate. Tightly knit fruit and plush velvety tannins are perfectly balanced by a backbone of invigorating acidity that delivers outstanding structure and a lasting finish. Elegant yet powerful, in a way that Pinotphiles crave.

    Description

Main Divide is the local name for the mighty range of Southern Alps which form the backbone of Te Wai Pounamu, the South Island of New Zealand. Run by the Donaldson family, Main Divide operates like a second wine for Pegasus Bay with some extra grapes sourced from local growers. Main Divide’s philosophy is based on individuality and harmony. They produce distinctive, vibrant wines with lively fruit flavours, which at the same time are integrated and harmonious.

Good value. Lots of cherry, with some leathery layers.

The richly fruited 2019 Pinot Noir is mouthfilling and supple while providing ample tension. Offering plentiful concentration due to the season's naturally smaller crop, the wine has a distinctive herbal fragrance reminiscent of wormwood and woody herbs that are characteristic of a high percentage of whole bunches in the fermentation (approximately 40%). The herbal notes are joined by ripe cherry fruit and wild strawberries, while maturation in oak barrels (20% new) over the course of 18 months has imbued the wine with subtle baking spices. The finish is fragrant, fresh and supple, allowing the wine to be enjoyed in youth, but it has the depth to evolve over the coming 4–6 years. A carefully made Pinot Noir that's good value for money.
