Immediately on the nose and through to the palate this wine wraps you up in soft leather, sinking further into the well-worn couch with each sip. Fine and dusty tannins reminiscent of the darkest chocolates are woven together with notes of warm summer berries. The wine has refreshing acidity underpinned with truly masterful oak management creating a Pinot of sophisticated allure. The Moutere Clays provide an European edge – the fruit is kept in check with gentle unobtrusive umami characters. A tsunami like push across the palate, the wine surges with an even flow of purity and elegance. A pinot of this subtlety and suppleness is begging to be served next to the finest cut with a rich jus or a morish bowl of mushroom risotto laden with parmesan and thyme.

    Description

Neudorf’s belief is that great wines come from the heart, as well as the head. Founders Tim and Judy Finn were self-admittedly fresh from the ‘back to the land’ movement of the late sixties when they set up Neudorf Vineyards, with the aim of making wines with integrity. Organics are ‘the very heart of Neudorf’, and the winemaking team’s desire to tread gently is reflected in every decision they make. All Moutere blocks are either certified or in conversion. But Neudorf’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop there: there are a number of green initiatives in place, from switching to lightweight bottles, to composting all winery and food waste, to using a flock of sheep to compost, mow and fertilise their vineyards. The winery is also part of the ‘Family of Twelve’, a group of New Zealand winemakers who are determined to maintain individuality and character in their wines.

Despite the dry, hot season, the 2019 Tom's Block continues to be its broody, full-bodied self. It's a satisfying hunk of a Pinot that embraces you with its breadth. Imagine a well-hung piece of steak cooked over a barbecue and you’ll get the impression of this wine, with its smoky, savory, almost meaty essence. On the long finish, there's black cherry fruit, delicate oak spice (likely from the nicely chosen proportion of new – just 15%) and resolved chocolaty tannins that coat the mouth, commonly found from the clay-gravel soils in this part of Nelson. Good job.
