In truly exceptional years Royal Tokaji selects the finest berries from its finest vineyards and carefully produces a few barrels of Single Vineyard Aszú. Betsek hill is a celebrated First Growth vineyard located in the Mád basin. Its volcanic bedrock is overlaid with rich clay mixed with dark, almost black humus soil and chalk-white minerals. This is a very special dessert wine indeed. Enjoy with a basque cheesecake.

    Description

The Royal Tokaji Winery, founded in 1990, has become one of the most admired wineries in Tokaj. At the outset, Royal Tokaji decided to concentrate on producing single-vineyard wines, made from the First Growth vineyards of Mézes Mály, Nyulászó, Szt. Tamás and Betsek. Acknowledged as one of the region’s top winemakers, they combine traditional techniques with modern technology to create the award-winning Royal Tokaji range of wines. Royal Tokaji is the acknowledged leader of the renaissance of the legendary Hungarian wine, which, in the words of the wine author and company co-founder Hugh Johnson, is “a wine that would make angels sing out loud in praise”.

The 1995 Tokaji Betsek 6-Puttonyos is darker than the 1993 Betsek, and not quite as well defined on the nose, where resinous, waxy scents and a touch of burnt caramel develop with time. There is something almost sultry about it. The palate is sharp and slightly bitter on the entry, offering tangy marmalade and orange peel; it is cohesive and yet it feels shorter and less persistent than the 1993. Tasted at the Royal Tokaji Company tasting in London.
