Vieux Chateau Certan produced a brilliant wine from the great 2000 Bordeaux vintage, drinking beautifully now, with the promise of many more years’ development in bottle. It was purchased in its original wooden cases.
Under Alexandre Thienpont, the third generation proprietor of this 14 hectare estate, Vieux Château Certan, whose neighbours include Pétrus, has established itself as one of the most famous names in Pomerol.
Alexandre is a traditionalist at heart, and still carries out fermentation in large wooden vats; and employs restricted use of new oak, although he is open to modern techniques such as crop-thinning when he feels they are beneficial to the quality of his wines. Vieux Chateau Certan is crafted in an elegant, feminine style that seduces rather than dominates the palate.
