Description
The Derthona is made from the Timorasso grape, a rare and ancient indigenous Piedmontese variety, which has been saved from extinction by the gregarious and outspoken winemaker Walter Massa, who recognised Timorasso’s affinity with his terroir.
Timorasso produces tiny yields of immensely concentrated fruit and, in the past, was overlooked in favour of high-volume producing varieties, until Walter took over his family’s farm on the steep hills east of Tortona and produced 500 bottles from a tiny 5-hectare plot. His holding has now risen to 20 hectares (very little is grown elsewhere), and so this is a great opportunity to taste a wonderfully unique full-bodied white wine style with good acidity that shows plenty of fruit character and a mineral backbone. Enjoy with charcuterie, fish, seafood risotto and Asian dishes.
