The grapes used to make this wine are sourced exclusively from a registered single vineyard on Waterford Estate. This vineyard was planted in 1988, making it one of the oldest Chardonnay vineyards in South Africa. This Chardonnay vineyard was registered as single vineyard in 2012, which ensures that the traceability of the wine produced exclusively to the original 5.8-hectare block. Soils are comprised of red clay (Hutton) as well as large granite deposits and parent material found throughout the clay profile. The clay adds structure to the wine, while the granite produces great minerality and finesse to the overall presentation. A brilliant olive-green hue being characteristic of this single vineyard Chardonnay. The aromatics of this wine are driven by fresh peach pip, lime and a gentle influence from oak.

    Description

Waterford Estate is situated in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley on the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. The estate is owned by the Ord family and has been developed under the watchful eye of Kevin Arnold, Cellarmaster and Managing Partner, since 1998. Utilising the latest sustainability research, the estate uses only 120 hectares of their land for vines, to preserve and protect the natural fauna and flora on the estate. Tim Atkin MW assessed the estate as being a ‘first growth’ within South Africa in his 2019 report. The wines are indeed highly garlanded, recognised for their restraint and poise. The aim of the estate is ‘less is more’ to ensure the wines express their vineyard sites to the fullest.
